Littlestown Area SD logs donations, launches literacy event and scholarship partnership

Littlestown Area School District officials reported receiving multiple year-end donations and outlined plans to channel the gifts into student programs, including scholarships and early-literacy events.
Administrators told the board that “Staff leader has given us $500. This is designated for a scholarship that we are creating that would be awarded to a student that is going into education for law,” and that the district “received $15,000 from the Crystal Bessell family. Now that money is going to it's passing through us to go to the music department.” The board also noted a $2,000 gift from the Littlestown Eagles.
The donations, board members said, will support curriculum and extracurricular programming and a planned community literacy event. Officials described a first annual “Great Cake Day” on May 4 at the district building tied to the Valley Park Imagination Library; local bakers will make book-themed cakes as part of the event. A district speaker said the effort aims to expand into Adams County, saying, “So we're moving forward and to make this an opportunity for all children that reside within Adams County.”
Board members and staff also described working with the Thunderbolt Foundation on scholarships. One board member said the district had “received a request from, scholarship in, in her name. And since the board provides scholarship opportunities through our Thunderball Foundation, we contacted missus Becker and we are allowing missus Becker and the Thunderball Foundation to be able to take the lead on that.” The board recorded thanks to the donor family; a speaker added, “I hope they hear it.” A separate remark in the meeting noted the estate gift was “36%, per whole estate.”
District staff described ongoing partnerships with Community Aid, which runs clothing collection drives; the district has in the past converted collections into cash for programming and said it expects Community Aid to earmark future drops when donors specify the Thunderbolt Foundation or the district.
The announcements were made during routine board business; several of the donations and the scholarship delegation were approved by voice vote during the meeting.
