Union presents veteran-pay data; board and superintendent point to recent multi‑year raises

Vicki Kidwell, speaking for the Clay County Classroom Educators Association, presented salary data and comparisons during the Feb. 6 meeting that the union said show veteran teachers have not kept pace with earlier salary schedules and with cost-of-living changes.
Kidwell said the district’s current salary schedule yields lower pay for some long-tenured teachers than earlier schedules did, and she cited a comparison of a 27‑year teacher’s pay on the 2009 schedule versus the 2024–25 schedule. "This data does not lie," Kidwell said as she urged attention to veteran pay and shared anecdotal reports about long-tenured teachers supplementing income with other work.
Superintendent Michael Broski and several board members responded. Broski said the district has added roughly $54 million for compensation over the last four years, called that more than double any other comparable four‑year period in Clay County's history, and acknowledged more work remains to address veteran salaries. Board member Miss Hanson said she spends extensive time visiting schools and supports focusing on veteran teachers’ compensation.
Kidwell provided specific salary schedule materials to the board and asked members to review the data; she called for joint bargaining and further action to address the concerns raised by veteran educators. Board members encouraged participation in bargaining sessions and noted recent district actions on salary and insurance.
