Board approves calendar changes after winter closures; student days reduced and teacher work days adjusted

The Davidson County Board of Education on Jan. 21 approved revisions to two school calendars to account for inclement weather earlier in January. The board voted to revise the traditional 2024–25 calendar and the Davidson Early College in Yadkin Valley calendar after Human Resources presented detailed date changes.

The revisions, presented by Mr. Williams of Human Resources, move several instructional and teacher work days to make up for lost time from winter storms. For the district’s traditional calendar, Monday, Jan. 6, 2025, will be designated an optional teacher work day and instructional time for that date is waived; the district’s student days drop from 176 to 175 and optional teacher work days increase from 12 to 13. Friday, Jan. 10, and Monday, Jan. 13, were listed as inclement remote instructional days and Tuesday, Jan. 14, becomes an optional teacher work day (borrowed from a June date). The first semester was reported as 87 days and the second semester 88 days; the second‑quarter report‑card release moved from Jan. 31 to Feb. 5.

For the Davidson Early College in Yadkin Valley, similar adjustments were approved: Jan. 6 becomes an optional teacher work day with instructional time waived (total instructional days reduced from 176 to 175, then later to 174 after additional adjustments), Jan. 10 and Jan. 13 designated as inclement remote instructional days, and Jan. 14 changed to an optional teacher work day. The board approved both sets of calendar amendments by voice vote after motions and seconds were made during the meeting; no roll‑call tallies were read into the record.

Why it matters: the calendar changes alter when students will be in session and when teachers must report for work. The modifications also change report‑card release timing and the district’s count of required instructional days, which affects state reporting and local planning for extracurricular schedules.

Procedure and votes: Mr. Williams presented both calendars and asked for approval. A board member moved and another seconded each request; the chair asked, “All in favor? Any opposed?” and the board recorded the motions as approved by the voice vote. The meeting transcript does not contain individual yes/no tallies or names of the members who moved and seconded the motions. The board noted the calendar items were informational items prepared in advance and that no further votes on these specific changes were required beyond the approvals recorded.
