Public Works described two 2024 planning documents: a comprehensive transportation plan that lays out a 20‑year policy and investment framework, and a comprehensive safety action plan targeting a 30% reduction in fatal and serious crashes by 2040 and eventual elimination of such crashes.
The department said a five‑year crash analysis (2018–2022) found that about 59% of fatal and serious‑injury crashes occurred on just 6% of the city’s roads; it identified six “safety emphasis corridors” for engineering and programmatic work. The department also reported common contributing factors in the crash record: distracted driving (~18%), fixed objects (~24%), turning movements (~19%), drugs and alcohol (~15%) and high speeds (~18%).
Public Works described an ongoing traffic‑calming program that uses area‑wide studies to avoid shifting traffic to adjacent streets, and said several neighborhood projects identified in the last two years are under construction or will begin this year. The department also conducts week‑long stealth speed studies to measure real driver behavior.
Photo enforcement: Public Works said the city’s school‑zone photo program began in September 2023. It reported issuing about 7,800 warnings and more than 37,000 infractions since the program began; the noncompliance rate for significant speeding at those sites dropped from roughly 27% to about 2%.
The department said the state legislature recently expanded authority that now allows study of automated speed enforcement on arterial roadways. In 2025 the city plans to study selected safety‑emphasis corridors and may deploy up to three arterial automated enforcement sites depending on operational feasibility and resources.
Public Works noted eight transportation projects will be under construction in 2025 and roughly 10 additional projects are in design for later years; it directed residents to an interactive map on the city website for project details. Staff also encouraged residents to use the SeeClickFix app for non‑emergency service requests and reminded residents to call 911 or the police non‑emergency line for urgent hazards such as open manholes or water over roadways.
