Milford Selectmen used part of their Jan. 13 meeting to discuss persistent staffing shortages and turnover across town departments and to consider targeted steps to boost recruitment and retention.
Several board members said they want the town to take a strategic look at why positions remain open and why existing staff leave. Selectman Chris Labonte urged the board to brainstorm small changes that could improve recruitment. He noted early results from a new health‑savings‑account option that drew higher than expected enrollment and suggested improving how the town advertises benefits and pay in job postings.
Selectman Paul Dargi said he had begun work with the fire department on a marketing study and suggested the board convene a work session or relay findings to the compensation committee. Board members discussed using exit interviews, and department heads’ informal knowledge, to gather lessons about workplace culture and turnover causes.
Town Administrator Lincoln Daley told the board there are currently 17 full‑time and part‑time vacancies across town departments and said staff can prepare a more detailed list for further discussion. The board did not adopt any formal policy at the Jan. 13 meeting but directed staff to schedule follow‑up and to coordinate with the compensation committee and department heads on outreach and recruitment options.
