Veterans Park committee lays out 2024 accomplishments and solicits goals for 2025

On Jan. 22 the Veterans Park Ad Hoc Committee reviewed accomplishments from 2024 and solicited committee input on goals for 2025, including project funding, outreach and fundraising for the Circle of Honor tribute program.
Mister Nelson, a City staff member, summarized the 2024 highlights: plans approved last year, contractor selection and project quotes received, and an amendment to the tribute program to allow donations to support elements of the Circle of Honor Park. “The gopher tortoise, will be kept on‑site and we probably only have to impact 1 of those based on the drawings,” Nelson said when describing site constraints and environmental mitigation shown in the design.
Committee members discussed potential 2025 goals. Mr. Junos, a committee member, opened the agenda item by asking for ideas and said he would share his own suggestions after hearing from the group. Suggested goals included securing a fully funded budget to start and complete the project, preparing fundraising outreach for tribute program items (flagpoles, benches), and public notification via social media and direct contact with veterans organizations after financing is approved.
Staff said they would circulate a draft of the 2024 annual report for committee review prior to the next meeting and that the previous report had been compiled with committee input. Committee members asked for clear public‑facing information once the commission decision is known and for a future agenda item to develop a notification letter to veterans groups and other stakeholders.
