Volunteer group proposes 'Tree of Hope' memorial; board adds item to next agenda

Summary
A proposal funded by Holly’s Hope to install a tree and walkway (the 'Tree of Hope') was presented; the board agreed to place the item on next month’s agenda for further discussion and site recommendation.
A volunteer group proposed installing a ‘‘Tree of Hope’’ — a memorial tree with a painted-rock walkway where people could leave messages — and asked the advisory board to consider a location. The group said Holly’s Hope will pay for the tree and the survivors-of-suicide and Holly’s Hope groups will help maintain it.
A board member described potential siting options, including the Garden of Five Senses and a community walkway near San Pedro, but said parts of the community walk were not well maintained and might not be suitable. The board member said volunteers Alice White and others would help maintain the installation and suggested a sugar gum tree species.
A motion to place the Tree of Hope proposal on the board’s next meeting agenda passed by voice vote. Staff will provide recommendations for appropriate locations and any maintenance considerations at the next meeting.
