Advisory board reviews annual report: native-plant pilot, accreditation and civic priorities

At the January meeting the North Port Parks and Recreation Advisory Board reviewed the board’s annual report and its listed goals, highlighting a 2023 pilot native-planting project at Hope Park and recommending continued attention to accreditation and environmental collaboration.
Aquatics Manager Devon Pulis summarized the prior report and activities, noting the pilot at Hope Park where native plantings were installed around the entrance sign. “This was a pilot project, aimed at encouraging or... educating the public on native gardens,” Pulis said. The 2023 report also records the board’s involvement in events such as ribbon cuttings at McKibben Park and the Myakka Hatchee Greenway trail and the board’s role selecting the 2023 event theme.
Board goals listed in the report included supporting the Unified Land Development Code rewrite, promoting land acquisition for neighborhood parks, increasing collaboration with the environmental advisory board and increasing awareness of native plantings. Members noted the department achieved reaccreditation in September of the previous year and discussed whether to keep accreditation listed as a current goal. Several members suggested rephrasing the goal to “support the department’s future reaccreditation” so it remains an ongoing priority.
The board asked staff to draft updated language for the annual report to reflect recent accomplishments and bring the revised material to the commissioners as the advisory-board summary of activities.
