Parks and Recreation advisory board approves minutes, keeps 2024 goals and defers parkland acquisition

The North Port Parks and Recreation Advisory Board on Thursday approved its Nov. 21, 2024, meeting minutes with a correction to the chair’s name, voted to carry over its 2024 advisory goals into 2025 and unanimously postponed further action on parkland acquisition until after completion of the city’s parks master plan.
The board first approved the minutes after Aquatics Manager Devon Pulis noted the chair’s name appears in the draft minutes in two different forms and asked staff to correct it. “I did make that note for the minutes to reflect chair Jacqueline,” Pulis said. A motion to approve the minutes with that change passed by voice vote.
The board then debated whether to retain a bullet in the annual report about accreditation. Members agreed to keep the accreditation item in the goals, possibly reworded to reflect ‘‘future reaccreditation’’ so it remains on the board’s radar. The board voted to continue the 2024 goals into 2025 by voice vote.
On parkland acquisition, staff told the board an RFP for a parks master plan had closed and the resulting master plan — funded in this fiscal year’s budget — should guide any acquisition priorities. “From a staff perspective...that will all be bundled up within the master plan,” Aquatics Manager Devon Pulis said. The board moved to postpone parkland acquisition discussions until the master plan work is complete; that motion also passed unanimously.
The votes were taken by voice; no roll-call tallies were recorded in the meeting transcript.
Looking ahead, board members said they will revisit parkland acquisition and any rewording of the accreditation goal after staff and consultants complete the master plan and return updated material to the advisory board for review.
