Mobile dedicates Isom Cleland Civil Rights Memorial Park

City officials and family members gathered at the Isom Cleland Civil Rights Memorial Park in Mobile for a dedication ceremony where speakers honored the late council member Levon Manzie and the neighborhood’s civil rights legacy.

An event speaker said the park grew from a personal project of Manzie’s: "This was a vision that he had. He did not live to see it brought to fruition," and asked attendees to "reflect on his contribution and his role in making sure that this park happened." The speaker described the location as "a historic spot in our city" and said the park will help anchor revitalization in the surrounding area.

Another speaker noted the park’s lighting and symbolic intent, saying, "I don't know another park in the city of Mobile that has this many lights per square foot... it was meant to be a beacon." That comment referenced Commissioner Ludgood’s earlier remark about the park serving as a beacon in both daytime and nighttime.

A family member of the honoree spoke at the ceremony, offering thanks: "I am overwhelmed. On behalf of our family, we just want to thank everyone for participating, for your well wishes, and your commitment to the Isom Cleland Civil Rights Memorial Park is here." The speaker identified the gathering as a moment to remember local civil rights leaders who gathered in the neighborhood and to look ahead to new housing and offices being built around the square.
