Senate adds youth seat to environmental justice advisory structure with SB55

Sen. Winter moved the bill and told the chamber it came from the Colorado Youth Advisory Committee, which requested a stronger voice in environmental justice by creating an Environmental Justice Advisory Task Force seat for a trained, ex officio youth member. "We created the Environmental Justice Advisory Task Force. And we would like to have a seat on that board and an ex officio member who gets trained to be on that board so we can be productive and help make decisions," Senator Winter said on the floor.
The committee report was adopted without extended debate and the bill passed the Senate on floor action recorded as "Aye has it" for the second reading and later adoption. Sponsors framed the change as giving young people impacted by climate and environmental justice issues a formal advisory role and training so they can contribute effectively.
The bill passed on second reading and was ordered engrossed and placed on the calendar for third reading and final passage; transcript excerpts show later that Senate Bill 55 was adopted on the floor.
