The Bedford Historical Society updated the Historic District Commission on several outreach and event plans during the Feb. 4 meeting, including a walking-tour pamphlet revision, a proposed barn-and-old-house tour in September, monthly historical articles and a renewed effort to gather oral histories from older residents.
A historical society representative said the walking-tour pamphlet is being revised and that the society will restore the map previously removed from the pamphlet and distribute printed copies at the library and other local venues. “We have a walking tour of the downtown, a pamphlet. That we're updating,” the representative said.
The society reported it plans a barn tour and old-house tour that appears slated for September, and noted volunteers will staff a historical society booth at Old Town Day. Members also described plans for a monthly column in Greet Bedford and suggested running a town-history quiz or contest tied to the society’s monthly features, with a possible prize of a local-history book.
The society also discussed using oral histories and PCTV recordings to preserve memories of longtime residents. “We want to do some of those oral histories...it would be wonderful,” the representative said, citing the value of recording older residents’ recollections.
Members also discussed parade logistics and the society’s antique vehicle collection; organizers plan to feature a Model T in the historic-district parade and they suggested displaying the town’s horse-drawn hearse at events. Commissioners welcomed collaboration on Old Town Day and on educational materials for visitors, and asked the society to provide digital and printed versions of the walking tour for wider distribution.
No formal action was required or taken; the society’s announcements were recorded for commission and town staff follow-up.
