The El Segundo City Council approved the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee’s 2025 work plan and amended bylaws at its Feb. 4 meeting, and agreed to end a pilot program that had allowed two El Segundo Unified School District representatives to serve on the committee when that pilot term ends in February.
DEI Committee Chair Christabel Viena and Vice Chair Sean O’Brien presented a brief history of the committee, described accomplishments to date and outlined proposed bylaw changes, including a reduction to a seven-member body and a quorum rule change so that a majority of seated members would constitute a quorum. They also opened discussion about meeting frequency; after council discussion the committee will continue meeting monthly rather than moving to quarterly meetings.
Council approved the work plan as amended and the bylaw changes. The council also agreed to conclude the ESUSD pilot program allowing two El Segundo Unified School District representatives on the DEI committee at the end of its current term in February.
The transcript did not include a formal mover, seconder or roll-call vote in the excerpt provided; approval is recorded in the meeting minutes as an action taken by council.
The bylaw changes and membership adjustments will require staff follow-up to implement new appointment procedures and update committee materials.
