Plano Public Library staff showcase daily operations, outreach and popular puppet programs

Plano Public Library staff demonstrated daily operations, outreach and programming — including puppet shows — in an episode of the library’s Labor of Love series.

The episode illustrated how the five-branch Plano Public Library system aims to give patrons a consistent experience across locations while staff perform tasks behind the scenes, from sorting returned materials to leading story times and outreach events.

Kelsey Britton, a library services representative, said Plano’s five-branch model was part of what drew her to work for the system: "I really loved that Plano really represents having 5 libraries, but being 1 location. So every patron will have a very similar experience when going to any of the libraries here in Plano. And I just thought that Plano was very special in that way." Britton also said she grew up in Plano and that the system’s variety of daily duties — programs, story times and outreach — keeps work varied and community-focused.

The episode showed staff operating a sorter for returned items and assisting patrons at checkout. Lauren Stotts, senior public services librarian, helped with a traditional checkout demonstration after the video noted patrons can also use self-checkout kiosks or mobile checkout via phone. Puppet shows and other children’s programming were described onscreen as a popular part of the library’s offerings.

Throughout the episode staff encouraged interest in librarianship, recommending that anyone curious about library work follow their passion. The episode closed with a host thank-you and a note that more Labor of Love episodes are forthcoming.
