Edgewood police warn of regional ATM-theft ring after truck abandoned and burned

Police Chief Jason Youngman updated the Edgewood City Council on Jan. 28 about a regional series of attempted ATM thefts and asked residents to report suspicious activity near ATM locations.
Youngman said a truck was recently abandoned and set on fire at Jobita Station in an attempted ATM theft. He said the suspects in the regional ring have used stolen trucks and large equipment such as excavators and forklifts to steal ATMs, and that law enforcement agencies in South King County are investigating.
"If you've seen in the news over the last year or so, there's been a ring of folks going around in our region attempting to steal whole ATMs, generally using stolen trucks and large equipment like excavators and forklifts," Youngman told the council. "They have not hit anything in the Edgewood City yet, but they are active now in the South King County region and in our area. So we are actively working with other agencies to help identify more of the people involved in this ring and stop some of that activity."
The chief asked the public to report suspicious activity near standalone ATMs, drive-through bank areas, or people using large equipment near ATMs. "If you see any strange activity around ATMs...please call 911 so that we can investigate that," he said.
No arrests or suspects were identified on the record at the meeting, and the chief did not request new council action; he provided the update as an informational director's report.
