Parks staff told the council on Jan. 30 that Phase 1B of the Gig Harbor Sports Complex is nearing completion and that staff seek direction to begin a public naming process.
Jennifer Howard, parks manager, said Resolution 717 governs the naming process and requires the city to solicit suggestions, record all submissions and either have the Parks Commission make a recommendation or have council take public input directly. Staff proposed an online form to collect names and reasons from the public, to forward nominations to the Parks Commission and to return a commission recommendation to council for final approval.
Council signaled consensus to authorize staff to begin the naming solicitation and to ask the Parks Commission to develop a ranked recommendation for council review. Parks staff said they expect the commission recommendation at the next Parks Commission meeting and will forward the ranked options to council for a final decision.
No formal vote was taken; staff will proceed with the outreach and return a Parks Commission recommendation for council action.
