The Gig Harbor City Council on Jan. 27 adopted Resolution 13-82, designating the Tacoma Daily Index as the city’s official newspaper for required legal notices. The motion passed unanimously, 7–0.
City Clerk Stecker explained the statutory requirement that cities publish certain legal notices in a print newspaper on the Pierce County superior court’s approved list. Staff compared the Tacoma News Tribune (including Peninsula Gateway) and the Tacoma Daily Index and recommended switching to the Tacoma Daily Index because of publication frequency, responsiveness and a lower quoted rate.
Why it matters: The city must use a print publication for land-use and other official legal notices under current state practice, and the official newspaper handles required public hearing notices and land-use advertisement obligations. The choice affects how quickly notices can be published and the staff’s ability to meet deadlines.
Clerk Stecker noted that the News Tribune recently reduced print frequency and raised rates; the Daily Index publishes on business days, posts notices online and accepts noon-day submissions for next-day publication. Council member Wouk asked whether the city posts notices online; Stecker confirmed the city posts notices on its website and in the city newsletter in addition to newspaper publication. Council moved and seconded the resolution (moved by Council member Wouk; seconded by Council member Henderson) and approved it unanimously.
Ending: The resolution takes effect immediately and the clerk’s office will proceed with the Daily Index as the city’s official newspaper for required legal publications until the next required review.
