The Centralia City Council on Wednesday adopted a minor amendment to the city’s 2025–2036 Six‑Year Transportation Improvement Plan, adding an intersection improvement at Alder and South U Street and updating the cost estimate for the Hays Lake project.
Paige, city planning/transportation staff, said the Hays Lake project’s cost estimate was updated after the city submitted a grant application; the project received a 10‑out‑of‑15 rating for legislative funding consideration. The council also voted to add Alder & South U Street to the plan after the Port’s project and traffic analysis revealed sight‑distance problems at a newly installed two‑way stop. Staff temporarily converted the intersection to a four‑way stop for safety and told the council engineering work indicates the intersection will require either a traffic signal or a roundabout.
Deputy Mayor Brewer asked whether a roundabout is feasible; staff said consultants are evaluating whether a roundabout could fit without acquiring adjacent property and whether it could accommodate truck traffic. “They are looking at it to see if we can get a roundabout that can fit a truck through it,” planning staff said.
A formal public hearing was held as required; no members of the public testified. The council approved Resolution 2814 amending the transportation plan by a unanimous 7–0 vote.
