Committee awards Babcock standpipe removal contract to L and M Trucking for $85,500

ASHWAUBENON, Wis. — The Public Works and Protection Committee on Feb. 4 recommended the Village Board award the contract to remove the Babcock standpipe to L and M Trucking for $85,500, after staff received four bids that exceeded the budgeted $60,000 for demolition.
Ryan, the village engineer/staff presenter, said the higher bids reflect current scrap-steel market conditions and that removing the below-grade concrete entirely was offered as an alternate for an additional $4,350. Because the monopole construction bid and the standpipe removal are both paid from the village water utility capital fund, staff proposed reallocating savings from the monopole line to cover the removal costs; staff said the combined cost would still remain within the capital allocation for 2025.
Ryan said the contractor has relevant experience and provided a demolition plan acceptable to village staff. He described mitigation steps for working near residences and other structures, including using fire-retardant blankets when cutting steel and a 60-ton crane to lower pieces. He said two small buildings on site that house generators and network equipment will remain and that fence and trees used for screening will stay in place after removal.
A committee member moved to recommend the Village Board award the removal contract to L and M Trucking for $85,500; the motion carried. Staff will forward the recommendation to the Village Board and coordinate scheduling, provider relocation and site restoration.
