The House Education Committee voted Thursday to approve SB 46, a bill that renames East Arkansas Community College to University of Arkansas East Arkansas Community College to reflect a recent merger between the college and the University of Arkansas system.
Sponsor Representative Hollowell introduced the measure and described it as “a real simple bill” whose sole effect is changing the college’s name to reflect the merger. Kathy Klein, identified in committee as Chancellor, University of Arkansas East Arkansas Community College, was introduced as a guest but offered no additional testimony. No members of the public registered to speak for or against the bill in committee.
The bill drew no committee questions. A motion to “do pass” was placed on the table and approved by voice vote; the chair declared the bill passed in committee.
SB 46 only changes the institutional name; committee discussion and the bill text as presented did not indicate any changes to governance, accreditation, funding or campus operations. There were no amendments offered in committee and no public testimony opposing the name change.
The committee forwarded SB 46 as passed to the next stage of the legislative process.
