The Huntsville Historic Preservation Commission on Tuesday approved a certificate of appropriateness to add awnings above two rear entrances at 401 Clinton Avenue, a contributing Colonial Revival apartment building in Old Town.
The commission’s staff recommended approval, saying the proposed awnings would be installed on secondary, below‑grade rear entrances and would not be significantly visible from principal street views. Staff presented two material options: Option A to match the building’s existing copper front awning, and Option B using a bronze standing‑seam metal with the same sloped form.
Commissioners asked about other ongoing site work. An applicant present identified themselves as the property owner and said exterior paint and additional landscaping will screen mechanical units; staff confirmed the property owner has proposed planting bushes to screen ground‑level air‑conditioning equipment and plans to paint upper‑level surfaces to better blend with the brick façade. Staff noted the rear awnings approximate the mansard‑style front awning and recommended approval.
A motion to approve the application “as submitted” carried after a second and the commission’s voice vote. The commission noted either material option A or B is acceptable and that additional changes to materials would require further review if they diverge from what was approved.
The commission closed public comment on the item; a certificate of appropriateness will follow in writing approximately one week after the hearing, outlining the approved materials and any conditions for building permits.
