Board discusses returning to 1 core and 1 elective exam per semester; no policy vote

The Harrison County Board of Education debated possible revisions to the district’s semester exam policy during Tuesday’s meeting but took no formal vote on a policy change.

Board members discussed reinstating the district’s former practice of requiring students to take one core course exam and one elective exam each semester, with the option for some classes to use comprehensive projects or presentations instead of a traditional exam. One board member described the prior policy as fair and said it reduced student test load while preserving assessment rigor.

Speakers raised several implementation points: offering a voluntary exam option for students seeking to improve a grade, how the policy should treat semester‑ and year‑long courses, and concerns about concentrating too many exams into short periods for students in block schedules. A member asked that any revised policy be released for a 30‑day public comment period and reviewed in draft form by a small committee made up of teachers, students and administrators before being posted for public comment.

The board discussed whether changes should take effect immediately for second semester or be implemented beginning in the fall; several members expressed a preference to start in the fall so students and families would have advance notice. There was also discussion of grading rounding (for example how combinations of grades should round) and whether the policy should explicitly allow comprehensive alternatives in lieu of tests.

No motion to adopt a different exam policy was passed at the meeting. Board members agreed to assemble a review group, circulate a draft for local stakeholder review and consider public comment before returning a proposal to the board for possible action.
