Belmont-Redwood Shores School District officials on an information night outlined the timeline, age eligibility rules and required paperwork for transitional kindergarten (TK) and kindergarten registration.
The district is currently in the middle of its TK/K enrollment timeline, and Sheila Walters, principal at Cipriani Elementary, said, “we're kind of in the middle right now of this timeline for TKK enrollment.” She and Chuck Donovan, principal at Central, walked families through priority dates, notification mailings and how transfer requests are handled.
District officials said sibling-priority enrollment closes on Valentine’s Day and that school assignment notification letters are mailed in April for first-period enrollees and again in June for second-period enrollees. Walters said families should receive intent-to-return notices earlier in the cycle. Donovan said that transfers and interdistrict requests are reviewed about four weeks before the school year begins, typically in July, and that the district uses an algorithm to assign students “with a school within walking distance,” though that outcome is not guaranteed.
The district stated specific age cutoffs for the coming school year: transitional kindergarten is open to children who turn 4 on or before Sept. 1, and kindergarten enrollment is open to children who turn 5 on or before Sept. 1.
Donovan listed the documents the district requires to complete registration: “driver's license, student birth certificate, proof of residency, so property tax bill and 2 utility bills, current immunization records.” He added that active individualized education programs (IEPs) or Section 504 plans must be brought at registration. If residency is not in the parent or caregiver’s name, the district requires a shared-residency affidavit.
All enrollment is processed online through the district office, and families who need help are asked to schedule an appointment at the district office for assistance with uploads or in-person document review. Walters said ParentSquare invitations for official district communications will be sent once families receive a school assignment.
School officials closed by reminding families that transfer requests must be submitted annually and that finalized registration requires all listed documents to be uploaded and approved.
The district did not vote or take formal action at the session; the presentation was informational and intended to guide families through the registration process.
