Retired teachers urge community donations for ‘Adopt a Fifth Grader’ scholarships

Jarrett outlined how the program honors fifth-grade students chosen by their teachers with an immediate $25 gift certificate and a pledge of future college funding: $500 upon high-school graduation or $1,000 if the student enrolls in 12 units at Mendocino College. Jarrett said the program targets students who show promise but face barriers to academic success; Mendocino College staff told Jarrett that about 50% of students in the Mendocino program go on to college.
Jarrett said a full scholarship costs about $700 per student and that either county civic groups or individuals can invite program directors to make presentations. The board did not take formal action; Jarrett provided flyers and contact information for donors.
