BOISE, Idaho — The Idaho Senate on Feb. 6 approved Senate Bill 10-29 to add a district judge for the Seventh Judicial District, to be chambered in Bonneville County. The bill passed final consideration by a vote of 28 in favor and 7 against.
Senator Sarah Leakey, speaking in support during third reading, described the Seventh Judicial District as the state's largest judicial district by geography and said judges there spend substantial time traveling among counties to hear cases. "Because of the large size of this judicial district, the judges spend a lot of time traveling ... this judicial district has had a 22% population increase over 10 years," Leakey said, arguing the growth and travel reduce time judges can spend in courtrooms resolving cases.
Senators closed debate without extended floor debate; the Senate called the roll and recorded 28 ayes and 7 nays. Following passage in the Senate, the bill will be transmitted to the House.
The bill creates a statutory new judicial seat for the Seventh Judicial District and specifies the chamber location in Bonneville County. It does not name or appoint an individual to the position; appointment or election procedures would follow existing statutory processes.
