Board committee advances internship, volunteer and visitor policies; several legacy policies to be repealed

Board members asked whether regular board visits to schools would trigger volunteer screening; staff said board members who do not have unsupervised access would not be required to undergo the full volunteer process, and staff offered to amend the policy if the board wanted clear language on board visits.

A new Policy 6,400 (visitors to school) was presented to require visitors to check in at main offices and to set procedures for outside service providers (therapists, behavioral technicians) who request classroom observation. Staff noted assemblies and large events are currently treated like sports events and the district lacks a system to require check‑in for large assemblies; staff said they would study system changes before writing stricter assembly‑level requirements into policy.

Staff also proposed repealing older policies that are obsolete or superseded, including Policy 52-30 (game policy), Policy 11-51 (district annual report), Policy 11-70 (older strategic plan) and renumbering Policy 41-50 (student attendance/attendance area) to 62-50 (school boundary). The policy committee will place the repeals on the consent calendar for a future board action.
