Merrol Hyde Magnet School to change valedictorian criteria starting with class of 2026

Principal Darren Frame of Merrol Hyde Magnet School presented a plan to the Sumner County School Board on Jan. 21 to change how the school awards the valedictorian distinction, starting with the class of 2026.
Frame told the board that extensive student surveys and outreach to alumni and college admissions offices found students were experiencing high levels of stress and were narrowingly pursuing honors and AP courses solely to chase the valedictorian title. "Students believed they had to be number 1 to get into college," Frame said, noting many colleges no longer prioritize class rank. "We are not eliminating the title, nor are we lowering our rigor or expectations."
Under the new plan, Merrol Hyde will add criteria to the valedictorian distinction beyond GPA and advanced coursework.
