Superintendent reports Utah Fits All litigation, $5 million Intermountain grant and USBA advocacy tools

On litigation, Butters said the Utah Education Association has challenged the use of public funds for the Utah Fits All scholarship in Third District Court; a ruling is expected soon and the case could ultimately reach the state Supreme Court. Staff described the case as one to watch because similar litigation in other states has moved through appeals courts.
Butters also reported that the district and Dr. Belknap applied for an Intermountain Health grant to support medically based career pathways; the district was awarded $5,000,000 and has been meeting with partners including OTEC and Weber State University to plan potential programs. Staff said additional legislative grant windows may open this session and the district intends to pursue complementary state grant funding for an innovative project model.
On advocacy, board member Janice summarized USBAs "Push Pause" messaging and encouraged board members and the public to sign up for Remind for legislative updates and to attend USBAs Day on the Hill on Jan. 27. The superintendent and staff recommended the CSF bill tracker and the USBA advocacy toolkit as resources to follow pending legislation.
Butters also celebrated that Matt Patterson, principal at Mountain View Junior High, was named Middle School Principal of the Year; the board plans to recognize him at the next regular board meeting.
