The Los Angeles City Council on May 30 approved findings and voted to take up litigation in closed session concerning Congregation Etz Chaim v. City of Los Angeles. The matter had been discussed in the Planning, Land Use and Management Committee, and the city attorney told the council there is a settlement conference scheduled the following day and the city must report to the judge.
The city attorney requested the council adopt the open-session findings and then move into closed session pursuant to Government Code section 54956.9(a). The council voted 10-0 to adopt the findings and then voted 10-0 to take up the matter in closed session. The chair instructed that the litigation matter would be handled in closed session and staff would report back as appropriate after the closed session and any mandated public reporting.
No substantive settlement terms were discussed in open session; the council’s action was limited to adopting findings necessary to convene a closed session on pending litigation pursuant to the cited government code provision.
