Shady Grove Medical Center requests $3 million for ER rebuild equipment, cites rising costs

Neil Roy, chief medical officer at Shady Grove Medical Center, asked the Montgomery County Council for $3,000,000 to help buy diagnostic equipment for the hospital’s planned emergency department rebuild and thrombectomy center.
Roy said the state approved roughly $180,000,000 for the project in 2021 but that costs have since risen and the current estimate for the rebuild is “nearly $250 to $280,000,000.” He said Shady Grove is one of the largest hospitals in Montgomery County, the county’s only accredited thrombectomy center for stroke care, and the largest provider of behavioral health services in the county. He described the funding request as targeted to imaging equipment — CAT scanners and ultrasound machines — that will enable faster, more effective stroke and emergency care: “So your support, just for that $3,000,000 … really makes a huge difference in all of our lives,” Roy said, adding a personal example of care his mother received at the hospital.
The testimony requested county support for the equipment; the public hearing record does not show a council vote or commitment during this session.
