Poolesville health nonprofit asks council to accelerate community center and clinic funding

WUMCO Health requested Montgomery County move up funding for a Poolesville community center that would include clinic space to provide local primary care, dental and mental‑health services for Western Upper Montgomery County residents.
Melissa Weidenhofer, community health manager for WUMCO Health, told the council the Poolesville community center and clinic space slated in the CIP should be funded earlier than currently scheduled so residents can access primary care, dental and mental‑health services locally.
Weidenhofer described WUMCO’s three years of local service, including pop‑up primary care and a mobile dental partner, and said pop‑up clinics reach only those most desperate for care. She argued a designated clinic space in a professional environment would expand access and dignity for low‑income and homebound residents. “We do believe that another entire layer of people would make use of a clinic if they were given a legitimate designated clinic space in a professional environment that affords them the respect and dignity and privacy that they deserve,” she said.
Weidenhofer said the Poolesville community center project is currently slated to begin in 2029 and be completed in 2030 (as stated in testimony) and asked the council to consider moving the project into the upcoming fiscal year so services can be delivered sooner.
No council vote or change was recorded during the public hearing.
