The Lowndes County Board of Commissioners approved a FY2025 Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) continuance grant application from the Solicitor General's Office. The federal request is $79,112; the county will provide a required match of $26,371.
"These funds are used to fund special prosecutor to prosecute these cases," Miss Dix said, describing the purpose of the grant. Miss Dix also said the office has received VAWA funding since February 2018.
The motion to approve the grant request was made by Commissioner Evans and seconded by Commissioner Weisenbaker. The board voted in favor by voice vote; the motion carried.
County officials did not provide additional detail in the meeting about the grant's duration beyond the FY2025 request or whether the match will come from existing appropriations or require a budget amendment. Miss Dix said staff would answer questions as needed.
The approval allows the Solicitor General's Office to submit the application for the FY2025 VAWA continuance grant and obligates the county to provide the stated local match if the award is made.
