Board approves consent items, personnel actions and reinstatements; routine votes carry unanimously

The Desert Sands Unified Board of Education completed a series of routine motions and votes during its Feb. 4 meeting, approving minutes, agenda items, grouped consent items and personnel actions, and reporting closed-session reinstatement decisions.
Early in the meeting the board approved the minutes of the January 2025 regular meeting on a motion that carried 5–0 with one preferential vote. The board then approved the Feb. 4 agenda by voice vote; multiple grouped motions followed to take items as a group for general functions, educational services, personnel services and consent calendars. Trustees consistently recorded affirmative votes, and the meeting record shows the motions carried, typically 5–0.
Notable roll-call votes included a motion on item 18.1 (a resolution requiring a roll-call vote), which passed on a recorded roll-call vote of 5–0 with trustees Pierce, Alvarez, Perez, Duran and President Watson recorded as voting “aye.” The board approved grouped educational-services items, grouped personnel services items, and multiple consent calendars by unanimous votes.
In closed session the board reported two reinstatement actions for students. Superintendent/administration reported that on motion by Trustee Linda Porras and second by Trustee Mike Duran, the board accepted the recommendation of reinstatement for student case 20OnetwentyTwo-seventy3 by a 5–0 vote. On a subsequent motion by Trustee Porras, seconded by Trustee Alvarez, the board accepted the recommendation of reinstatement for student case number 20ThreetwentyFour-thirty7, also by a 5–0 vote.
The board announced five certificated retirements and approved those personnel items by unanimous vote; the retirees named were Kathleen Cave (Palm Desert Charter Middle School), Lori Guertin (Palm Desert Charter Middle), Richard Keane (Shadow Hills High), Yvonne LaRotte (Jefferson Middle) and David Parsons (Shadow Hills High). The meeting record shows motions for these personnel approvals carried 5–0.
The board adjourned the meeting at 9:13 p.m.
