Desert Sands board recognizes La Quinta teams, Common Sense district awardees and names two administrators

The Desert Sands Unified Board of Education used its Feb. 4 meeting to recognize student and staff accomplishments and to introduce two newly appointed administrators.
Board President Watson and district leaders presented academic and athletic recognition to La Quinta High School’s girls and boys cross-country teams for high team GPAs (reported as 4.37 for girls and 4.31 for boys) and their DEL championship season. The board presented a plaque to student board member Alexis Domingo for her service.
The district also announced that 23 schools had earned Common Sense School awards for comprehensive digital citizenship instruction and that Desert Sands had attained district-wide Common Sense status, a recognition from Common Sense Media for integrating digital-citizenship lessons, family engagement and responsible-technology culture.
Superintendent and cabinet introduced two new administrators. Julio Zuniga was presented as the new assistant principal at Reagan Elementary; Zuniga described his prior roles and thanked family members in brief remarks. Apollonio Polo del Toro (presented as Apollonio Polo del Toro) was introduced as the new director of transportation; Polo del Toro said he spent 24 years with the SunLine Transit Agency and most recently was director of transportation for Redlands Unified School District.
Board members offered congratulations and remarks, including recognition of staff who supported the district during the recent death of teacher Kyla Burton and praise for staff crisis-management support.
No board action was required for the recognitions and introductions; these items were presented for information and acknowledgment.
