Council member urges public clarity after RFA wildfire deployment; reports equipment theft and misinformation during response

Councilmember Sean told the City Council on Jan. 28 that the Regional Fire Authority’s recent deployment to assist wildfire response in Southern California will be the subject of a partner briefing and that the authority plans community outreach on wildland-fire prevention.

Sean said the RFA reported the deployment "went as well as they could hope" and that the authority will prepare a presentation to partner-city councils when the RFA board is ready.

Sean also described misinformation and problematic public reaction during the deployment. He said a widely circulated claim — that engines were turned back at a San Francisco inspection point because their emissions did not meet California standards — was false and that inspections were performed to ensure the trucks were safe to operate in the field. "They were inspecting to make sure those trucks could do what they needed to so that they don't send the firefighters into position where they end up being killed or injured," he said.

Sean added that engines have been targeted by thieves who listen to emergency-call radio traffic and that critical rescue equipment such as hydraulic tools (sometimes called the "jaws of life") has been stolen from apparatus while crews respond to calls. He said crews are now locking equipment compartments and exploring tagging equipment so stolen items can be traced.

Sean said he requested the RFA present to the partner cities and suggested holding a dedicated event focused on wildland-fire prevention and community preparedness.

No council action was required; Sean asked that the RFA briefing be coordinated with partner-city councils.
