Covington council appoints two Parks & Recreation members and a youth councilor

Councilmembers voted to appoint Laura Morrissey to Position 7 of the Parks and Recreation Commission with a term expiring Jan. 31, 2028; Wesley King to Position 5 of the Parks and Recreation Commission with a term expiring Jan. 31, 2028; and Manas Sankalp to Position 5 of the Youth Council with a term expiring June 30, 2026. Each appointment was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote.
Councilmember Debbie moved to appoint Laura Morrissey and was seconded by Councilmember Christina. Debbie told the council that "Laura has already been filling the position, as the chair of the Parks and Rec Commission," and praised Morrissey’s knowledge and community connections. After discussion the appointment carried by voice vote.
Councilmember Sean moved to appoint Wesley King; the motion was seconded by Councilmember Joe. Sean said he was "impressed with Wesley's past service and his desire to get more involved in his community," noting King’s recreation-management background and military leadership. The council approved the appointment by voice vote.
Councilmember Beth moved to appoint Manas Sankalp to the Youth Council and a second was recorded; Beth said Sankalp displayed "professionalism" and a consistent interest in peer-to-peer outreach and education. The council approved the appointment by voice vote.
All three motions passed without a recorded roll-call tally in the meeting minutes; no members announced opposition during the votes.
The new Parks and Recreation commissioners will join ongoing commission work including parks planning, temporary-park discussions and near-term projects such as Jenkins Creek Park; the Youth Council appointment adds a student voice for school and youth outreach efforts.
Council and staff said they expect the appointees to begin participating in commission work and outreach according to each commission’s schedule.
