County attorney says Stevens property cleanup has seen no progress; county to seek status conference

A county official identified in the meeting as Mr. Wilson said the county previously filed suit and obtained an order regarding cleanup of the Stevens property but that, to date, the ordered cleanup has not occurred. Wilson said the county is preparing and will file a motion for a status conference and hopes to have the Stevenses back in court within a month to discuss cleanup procedures.
Wilson told commissioners that if the property remains unaddressed, the county may be required to pay for the cleanup initially and then place the cost on the property's tax record under statutory procedures; he said the board is mindful both of property owners' rights and of neighbors affected by the condition. Wilson said the county is moving "as far and as fast as we can" and that the county will follow statutory procedures in pursuing cleanup.
No board vote was taken on cleanup funding during the meeting; Wilson said the motion for a status conference will be filed the next morning. Commissioners and others in the meeting expressed calls and complaints about the property and thanked Wilson for following up.
