Wendover air-race group asks county to certify course; seeks $30,000 one-time certification for airport

Presenters proposing a sport-class air-race event told the Tooele County Commission they would like the county to fund certification of a race course at Wendover Airport, a one-time cost the presenters said would be about $30,000.
Troy Rushton and Jared Usselman described months of planning and said certification is an engineering, AutoCAD and FAA-inspection process that the airport (owned by the county) would contract through the Reno Air Racing Association’s sport class division. “The number they've identified is $30,000 to make the certification… It's a one-time investment unless there's some kind of substantial changes made to the course,” Rushton said.
Presenters said the certification would cover multiple course lengths (sport class, biplane and jet configurations) so the site would be usable for several race classes without repeat certification, and that temporary pylons or rented lifts can be used for the FAA inspection rather than permanent fixtures. Commission members asked clarifying questions about whether the county would need to install permanent pylons or other capital improvements; presenters responded the $30,000 covers engineering and certification and that temporary pylons are acceptable for the certification process.
Commissioners asked for written materials and an introduction to the Air Race Association contacts; the presenters agreed to provide documentation and to introduce county staff to association engineers. The Commission did not take a funding vote at the meeting; the item was presented for preliminary consideration and follow-up.
