Board agrees to pursue FSBA master board training; trustees ask to delay if new member joins

Alachua County School Board members agreed by consensus Feb. 4 to request master board training from the Florida School Boards Association (FSBA). Trustees said the training helps with board governance, relationship building and meeting procedures.
Several trustees said the training is particularly useful when there is a new board member or a new superintendent. Because the board currently has an open seat, some trustees asked staff to request a later slot in FSBA’s schedule so the full board could attend after the fifth seat is filled.
Board attorney Mr. Delaney advised that the board did not need a formal vote to place the request; trustees treated the item as a consensus‑level decision and asked the superintendent’s office to follow up with FSBA about scheduling and cost. One member in the audience asked about budget impact; staff said the course is an on‑site training hosted by FSBA trainers, local trainers are available, and the estimated fee is under $5,000 to be paid from the board’s training budget.
Trustees said they supported the training as a way to improve internal operations, meeting efficiency and communications among board members, staff and the superintendent.
