Board adopts amendments to policy on challenges to library and instructional materials

District staff presented the revisions and said the proposed changes were shown in a statement of purpose and an attached policy document; the board had previously held a first reading on Dec. 10, 2024, and a public hearing on Jan. 21, 2025. The statement of purpose and effect cited input received at the first reading and the public hearing and explained the reasons for the amendments.
A motion to approve the amendments was moved by Ms. Surdon and seconded by Dr. McNeely. The board voted 4‑0 to adopt the amendments as presented.
The board did not discuss the content of individual challenged titles at the Feb. 4 meeting; staff said changes to the policy reflected community input received during the earlier hearing process. The superintendent had recommended approval.
Board members and staff indicated the policy change is intended to clarify procedure for parents and staff who wish to challenge reading list items and to incorporate feedback from the public hearing and the first reading.
The amendments will be included in the district policy manual and posted with the accompanying statement of purpose and effect.
