Board approves principal and assistant superintendent appointments

SALT LAKE CITY — The Granite School District Board of Education approved administrative appointments at its Feb. 4 meeting, confirming Nick Blythe as principal of the district’s new Dual Language Immersion (DLI) school and naming Dr. Tyler Howe to the district’s executive leadership team as an assistant superintendent.

Assistant Superintendent John Welburn introduced Nick Blythe and summarized Blythe’s experience: “Nick has been a Spanish teacher at Titusville High School, a DLI teacher at Eisenhower and Evergreen junior high schools, and a DLI specialist for our district. He was an intern assistant principal at Stansbury Elementary and is currently an assistant principal at Stansbury and Valleycrest Elementary Schools,” Welburn said. The board approved the appointment by voice vote after a motion to accept administrative appointments.

Superintendent Ben Horsley announced that Dr. Tyler Howe will fill the assistant superintendent vacancy that will be created by Welburn’s retirement at the end of the school year. Dr. Howe introduced family members and described a long career in the district dating from his time as an elementary student through roles as teacher and principal. Horsley said Dr. Howe will immediately assist with interviews and selection of school leadership and improvement directors and that the move will create a forthcoming vacancy at Granger High School.

The board motion to approve administrative appointments carried by voice vote; the record shows the motion passed but does not include a numeric roll‑call tally. The district plans transition work to fill subsequent openings and to provide additional information on timelines and successor nominations.
