Granite School Board adopts 2026–27 calendar after districtwide survey

SALT LAKE CITY — The Granite School District Board of Education on Feb. 4 approved Calendar B as the district’s 2026–27 school calendar after district staff presented results from a large public survey.

District staff presented a summary of 7,620 responses showing broad support for the earlier‑August Calendar B option: 58% of survey respondents identified as parents, 15% as students, 20% as employees and 9% as both parents and employees. “Of the two calendars, calendar B had 59% overall support versus 41% for calendar A,” said Craig Soffer, a district staff member who led the calendar presentation. He said the main operational difference is that Calendar B begins earlier in August so the first semester ends before the winter break, while Calendar A starts later in August and would require the semester to extend into January.

The survey showed different preferences by group: employees favored Calendar B by a roughly two‑to‑one margin, while parents were closer in split. Soffer told the board the student responses strongly favored ending the semester prior to the winter holiday. After discussion and a motion to adopt Calendar B, the board approved the calendar in a voice vote. The meeting record shows a voice vote in favor with no roll‑call tally recorded; district staff noted the motion passed.

Board members and staff said the calendar choice followed an unusually large participation rate and reflected the district’s goal of balancing instructional needs and family schedules. The administration will publish the finalized calendar and associated operational details for schools and families.
