Greg Cujo Park Phase 1A awarded; RAC Phase 3 design launched and synthetic turf work planned

Staff reported that construction bids for Greg Cujo Park Phase 1A were opened Jan. 28 and City Council approved an award to Midway Underground. The approved contract amount reported to the board was approximately $6.1 million; the engineer's estimate was about $5.8 million. Work is expected to begin in March with a partial completion target in June and broader completion by October, subject to lead times for shelters and playground equipment. Staff said a groundbreaking was planned for March 6 and that public attendance would be limited for safety, with a plan to livestream the event.

Parks staff also reported that design work for Regional Athletic Complex (RAC) Phase 3 has launched. A landscape architect is under contract to develop three concept options emphasizing baseball and softball; concepts could include a college‑regulation baseball field, additional softball fields, resurfacing an existing soccer field to synthetic turf with lights, an additional playground, frontage and utility improvements, an at‑grade crossing on Marvin Road, added parking and walking trails. Staff said consultants will present concepts to City Council in May and that construction is expected to begin in 2027 to remain eligible for extension funding.

In related operations news, staff said synthetic turf replacement in a Rack bullpen and a planned full replacement of Field 1 at the Rack will result in the closure of Soccer/Field 1 for approximately the month of March while the contractor strips and installs new turf. The Parks Maintenance Supervisor reported an upcoming warranty replacement and other maintenance activities across parks.

Staff requested the board note project timelines and that staff will return with design options and public outreach plans for RAC Phase 3.
