West Des Moines lays tentative timeline for E. P. True/Bridgewood extension; construction planned to start in 2025

The city engineer, Brian Hemestad, told the council the city has a tentative alignment for extending E. P. True into the area near Grand Prairie Parkway and is "working on right of way acquisition for EP True" and plans to start construction in 2025. Hemestad added the city has no funding committed yet to extend the roadway further west beyond the alignment and will move to construction "until some development occurs." "We plan to start construction next... 2025," Hemestad said when describing the schedule.
Why this matters: The alignment will serve planned growth in southwest West Des Moines and provide access needed for future school and residential projects; Hemestad noted the planned road will connect through property recently purchased for Waukee Community Schools' third public high school.
Public questions and city response
Jill Griffith, a resident representing Davis Estates Limited, asked whether the EP True extension would require additional property acquisition and when the extension would connect fully to Grand Prairie Parkway. Hemestad said the design work is advanced enough to show an alignment, that right-of-way acquisition is underway and that the city expects to start construction in 2025 and complete the connection in 2026. Hemestad also said the city will not move forward on construction before development activity or funding justify the next steps.
Council action
The council voted to approve a resolution authorizing acquisition of agricultural property needed for the extension (Item 6C). The vote was recorded as 4-0 in favor.
