The Georgia House Rural Development Committee adopted its rules and voted to lower the committee quorum from eight members to six at its first meeting, lawmakers said.
The new standing committee approved the change to the quorum and then adopted the rules by voice vote after a motion and a second; no roll-call tally was recorded in the meeting record. Committee members introduced themselves and described the rural counties and interests they represent before the business items were taken up.
The committee chair opened the meeting by thanking outgoing leaders of the rural development council and staff assigned to the committee, including policy analyst Leo Chancey and administrative assistants Shaniqua Johnson and Deborah Jackson. Members said they will focus on policies that affect counties with populations of 50,000 or fewer, a classification the chair shared from the committee packet and maps provided to members.
Representative Mac Jackson, who identified the cities and counties he represents, said he was “glad to be on this committee because there are important issues in rural Georgia.” Other members who introduced themselves included Mike Cameron, Jacqueline Ford, Joe Campbell, Angie Osteen, Debbie Buckner, Johnny Chastain and John Corbett, each noting the rural character of their districts and local economic priorities such as timber, agriculture and small-town industries.
Members were told the committee comprises 15 members; the chair said maps in the packet show approximately 120 of Georgia’s 159 counties meet the 50,000-or-fewer population definition used for the committee’s focus. The chair also said the committee will not yet set a standing meeting time and will schedule meetings as needed; members were told a meeting could occur the following week.
The meeting concluded after procedural business and a presentation from the Department of Community Affairs; the chair said staff and presenters would remain available to answer follow-up questions.
