TransJordan transfer station opening could push municipal tipping fees from $26 to about $36 per ton, city representative says

Ross Kekala, Murray’s representative to the TransJordan landfill/transfer‑station board, told the council that the new Sandy transfer station is scheduled for completion on May 19 and that the facility’s planned tipping fee is about $36 per ton compared with Murray’s current effective rate of about $26 per ton.
Kekala said Midvale’s recent RFP experience showed costs can differ materially and that Murray staff plan to extend the city’s current contract with its hauler (Ace) until a new procurement in November, to allow time to evaluate haul distance, tipping fees and net cost to ratepayers. He said some of the difference could be offset if hauling distances drop and private haulers reduce their fees, but council members should expect a budgetary hit tied to higher tipping fees.
Kekala also said TransJordan will host a board meeting and work session to finalize operational details, including hours, tipping‑fee schedules, staffing and hiring for the new transfer station. He said the city will evaluate environmental and road‑impact tradeoffs for hauling to the closer site in Sandy versus longer hauls to other facilities.
