City Administrator reported annual collection totals from Rumpke and raised a funding question for an electric-vehicle charging station that has operated under an expired grant, asking council to consider the expense in a Streets, Sidewalks and Sewers committee meeting.
The administrator said Rumpke reported 5,905.09 tons of trash collected in 2024 and 928.92 tons of recyclables. Separately, bulk pickup week produced 141.47 tons (the administrator said that figure was not included in the regular totals). For comparison, the administrator said Rumpke collected 5,363.98 tons of trash and 941.4 tons of recyclables in 2023.
On electric-vehicle charging infrastructure, the administrator said the charger in City Lot 7 was installed with grant funding that covered the unit, maintenance and back-end logistics for approximately four years; during that period the city paid only electricity. The grant has expired and the vendor has requested that the city begin paying for maintenance and the back-end service that processes customer payments and remits funds back to the city. The administrator said the requested charge is “a pretty substantial amount” and asked that council discuss whether to continue the service; the matter was referred to the Streets, Sidewalks and Sewers committee for further consideration.
Council business and next steps
Council set the Streets, Sidewalks and Sewers committee meeting for 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, in Council Chambers to consider Mayor’s paving request (Legislation 25-08) and other committee business; council members said the EV charger cost issue could be added to that agenda.
Ending
Council members asked staff and the law director to prepare any necessary ordinance codifications and cost estimates before the committee meeting; no final decision was recorded at the Feb. 3 session.
