Wheeling outlines Dundee Road water-main replacement and pending state mill-and-overlay

Village public works staff briefed the Board of Trustees on Feb. 3, 2025, about two upcoming construction projects affecting Dundee Road: a village-led water-main replacement and a state of Illinois milling and overlay.
Director Koepp said the village will replace water main along Dundee Road from about 700 feet west of Show N Beck to the railroad tracks, placing most of the new main down the roadway center. The project is scheduled to be completed before the state's planned mill-and-overlay of Dundee from Route 53 east to the McDonald's near the village; the state's timeline is not yet finalized. "The project is timed to be completed prior to the, state of Illinois's plan to mill and overlay," Koepp said.
Koepp told trustees crews plan to keep traffic open in both directions through the work by using outer lanes and movable barriers to protect workers, and that the village has contacted businesses and residents along the corridor. Electronic signage will be placed two weeks before the start of construction; when asked, Koepp said that typically pavement cutting is allowed by the state beginning about April 15 and that the village will try to start as early as the state permits. No project cost or exact start date from the state was provided at the meeting.
Trustees asked staff to post project updates on the village website if the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) supplies project-specific materials; staff said the village will post its own project web page and provide updates as parameters become available. Koepp said the village had opened bids and held a preconstruction meeting; the village will coordinate timing with the state to avoid conflicts.
Public works staff noted some pavement sections were recently repaved and likely will be excluded from milling; other older asphalt areas will be milled and overlaid, and the project will use movable barriers where water main is replaced down the road center.
No formal board vote was required on the informational presentation.
