Board members discussed emerging research and national legal activity related to water fluoridation but took no formal position.
The board chair summarized recent coverage and studies, saying the evidence is mixed depending on dose and that early studies showing IQ effects were from areas with much higher fluoride levels. “There’s absolutely no doubt that it’s been a tremendous benefit, for the pied population as far as helping their dentition,” the chair said, while also noting the need to measure downside risks.
Members noted a recent higher‑profile review and legal action that has prompted agencies to reassess evidence; one member observed that the question will likely be decided by federal regulators and researchers, and the board should await clearer guidance before making policy changes.
The board did not direct staff to pursue a local ordinance or statement and will monitor federal and state developments.
