Kershaw board approves CET USA to place foreign-exchange students in district high schools

The Kershaw County School Board of Trustees on Jan. 14 unanimously approved the Council of Educational Travel USA (CET USA) to place foreign-exchange students in district high schools under board policy JFABB.
Mister Farris presented the request and told trustees he had reviewed CET USA's materials and found they met the district's standards under policy JFABB, "admission of exchange and foreign students." Farris said CET USA is a nonprofit J-1 visa program with a screening process for students and host families and requires medical coverage before students are approved.
"I think they do a really good job of vetting their individuals," Farris said, noting the organization requires face-to-face visits with host families every eight weeks and more references than the Department of State requires.
Dr. King moved approval of CET USA; Mister Roberts seconded. With no further discussion, the board voted by voice and the motion carried unanimously. The approval allows CET USA to place students in district high schools if the principal approves the placement and host-family requirements are met.
The board record notes CET USA has full listing by the Council of Standards for International Education Travel (IET) and that host families must provide medical and emergency travel coverage; the district will not be responsible for students' visas under the J-1 program.
